Key Takeaways:

  • Delhi temperatures drop after mid-March rains; more cooling expected
  • Pre-monsoon activity to intensify between March 18 and 20.
  • Thunderstorms with strong winds likely late March 19 to March 20.
  • Clear weather expected from March 21 with cooler conditions.

After the initial heat spell during the first half of March, the weather conditions have nearly got back to normal in Delhi. Courtesy of two rainy days on 15th and 16th March, the day temperatures have plunged back to low 30’s, and now further drop is likely. With on & off pre-monsoon activity, the temperatures are unlikely to have any sharp rise. Days will remain pleasantly warm, and the nights will continue to be somewhat coolish. Rains are likely, commencing anytime soon and lasting till the weekend.

Northern mountains are already having weather activity in association with the Western Disturbance. An induced system over the plains is likely to join, and together, will increase the spread and scale of weather activity. A cyclonic circulation is marked over border areas of Central Pakistan and West Rajasthan. An east-west trough is coming up, extending from West Rajasthan to Southwest Uttar Pradesh, keeping close proximity to Delhi. The pattern will prevail between 18th and 20th March, albeit with a gradual shift to the east. Most parts of North India will have a fair amount of pre-monsoon activity during this period.

For the national capital, the precursor to the main event may start late tonight, with clouds making an appearance during evening hours. The sheet will thicken in the late night and early morning hours. This may bring very light drizzle in the morning and forenoon hours tomorrow. The cloud clusters will gather more spread during evening hours, triggering sharp showers in some pockets. The spread of weather activity will increase during late night and continue in the morning and forenoon hours on 20th March.

There is very little likelihood of any dust storm, as there is no loose soil as such in the vicinity. However, the thundershowers will be preceded and also accompanied by strong winds. Flashes of lightning and peals of thunder, along with the noise of heavy showers, will remain the highlights between midnight of 19th and forenoon of 20th March. The remnant effect may continue during the day in some areas on Friday. Broad clearance is expected the next morning, on 21st March. The nip in the air will be back, and the day temperature may also sink to about 28°C. The minimum temperature is likely to stay between 17°-18°C. The next round of rains could be back around mid-week next.
