The much-awaited and much-anticipated southwest monsoon has finally arrived in the national capital. The monsoon current reached with a marginal delay of 05 days from its scheduled date of 27th June. Most weather stations in the Delhi region received light rainfall. Safdarjung and Palam recorded 8 mm and 1 mm rainfall respectively. The maximum and minimum temperatures dipped below normal by 4-5 degrees. A further drop is likely during the next few days.

It appears that the monsoon has made a soft landing in Delhi. An east-west trough is connecting cyclonic circulations over North Punjab and the North Bay of Bengal. This feature is maintaining proximity to Delhi. As the low-pressure area forms over the Bay of Bengal and moves inland, the trough will strengthen and increase the spatial weather activity over the Delhi region.

Rainfall will remain mostly light till 04th July. The spread and intensity are expected to increase between 05th and 08th July. Moderate rain and thundershowers are likely during that period. Both day and night temperatures will take a dip. Humidity levels are likely to increase and conditions will become warm and humid during the sunshine hours. Nights are likely to become better and more bearable.

July and August are the rainiest months for Delhi. As June had a disappointing start, July is expected to carry the monsoon flag with decent rainfall during the first ten days of the month. For the last six years in a row, Delhi has received above-normal rainfall in the month of July, including the El Niño year of 2023. The month of July has a normal rainfall of 195.8 mm.
