Key Takeaways:

  • Rain and thunderstorm activity lashed parts of Delhi-NCR, especially Noida, Greater Noida and Palam.
  • Cloudy weather may keep Delhi temperatures near 38°C today.
  • No major rain activity is expected over Delhi-NCR during the next few days.
  • Heatwave-like conditions and ‘loo’ winds may develop next week as temperatures cross 40°C.

Delhi region witnessed rain and thundershower activity during the late evening and early night yesterday. The thunderstorm, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, was more intense around Noida, Greater Noida and the Palam area. Safdarjung recorded a short spell of thundershowers this morning between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Weather activity has now shifted north of Delhi towards Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh, covering Hisar, Jind, Karnal, Panipat, Meerut and Muzaffarnagar. Cloudy weather is likely to continue over Delhi/NCR during the forenoon and afternoon hours.

Base station Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 39°C yesterday, the highest this month so far. Due to cloudy weather and some showers in the neighbourhood, the day temperature is unlikely to increase much and may remain around 38°C (+/- 1°C). However, the mercury is likely to rise from tomorrow onwards.

A cyclonic circulation persists over the Punjab region. Another circulation is lying over Southwest Uttar Pradesh in the lower levels. An east-west trough, located close to Delhi for the last two days, has now shifted northward, though not very far from the city. While no intense weather activity is expected, local heat may trigger one isolated patch of tall clouds during the late afternoon hours. However, no significant weather activity is likely over Delhi/NCR during this week.

In the absence of any major weather activity, the mercury level is expected to rise and breach the 40°C mark for the first time this month between Friday and Sunday. The temperature is likely to remain between 40°C and 42°C till the middle of next week. Surface winds are expected to strengthen from Friday onwards and persist through next week. Strong winds along with rising temperatures may trigger ‘loo’ conditions, becoming more prominent during next week.
