Rainy Spell For Delhi: Temperature Drop Likely, Heat wave To Abate
Key Takeaways:
- Delhi/NCR has witnessed over a week of hot, humid, and uncomfortable weather conditions.
- Temperatures remained below official heat wave criteria despite severe discomfort levels.
- Thunderstorm and dust storm activity will intensify between May 28 and 31.
- A temperature drop of 7°-8°C is expected between May 30 and June 1.
Delhi region has reeled under muggy weather conditions for over one week. Sultry weather, loo conditions, soaring temperatures, and sticky nights were the hallmark during this period. One more day to go, and relief is likely during the approaching weekend.
Base station Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 43.5°C, a repeat of the previous day and about 3°C above normal. The highest temperatures were registered at Ayanagar (44.8°C) and Ridge (44.6°C), less than 3°C above the average. The day temperatures neither touched 45°C nor were above normal by more than 4.5°C. Technically, Delhi/NCR skipped heat wave conditions. Yet, the discomfort on account of heat and humidity exceeded the threshold, both during day and night.
A western disturbance is arriving over the mountains late tonight. An induced cyclonic circulation is coming up over Punjab and North Rajasthan. A well-marked deep east-west trough will run from the circulation up to Southwest Uttar Pradesh and North Madhya Pradesh. This trough will gradually shift southward and oscillate for the next 3-4 days, keeping proximity with Delhi. Weather activity will be focused more to the north of the trough, covering Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Northeast Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, and Northwest Madhya Pradesh.
Hot weather and “loo” conditions will continue over the Delhi area today and tomorrow. The temperature will rise to about 44°C (+/-1°C) today. The weather activity will commence tomorrow, a little late in the afternoon/evening, and therefore, the mercury will retain this heat. A drop in the temperature by 7°-8°C is expected between 30th May and 01st June 2026. Once again, the temperature will start rising early next week and reach about 40°C during the first half of the week.
Thunderstorm-dust storm activity is likely between 28th and 31st May. The remnant effect may be seen on 01st June as well, for a brief period. The intensity and spread of weather activity will be large on 30th and 31st May. Strong and gusty dust-raising winds will be followed by rain and thundershower activity. Strong peals of thunder accompanied by powerful lightning flashes are quite likely. Hailstorm activity may also occur in isolated pockets. Exposure in the open may be avoided under such conditions. Strict safety measures need to be observed during peak weather activity.
