Monsoon Activity To Ease Out Over Konkan And Mumbai: Light Rainfall For Next Ten Days
Key Takeaways:
- Mumbai has received over 1,100 mm of rainfall, exceeding its July normal of 919.9 mm.
- Heavy monsoon rains are expected to ease significantly, with only light and isolated showers over the next 10 days.
- Weakening synoptic systems and suppressed westerly winds will reduce rainfall across Konkan and Mumbai.
- The quieter weather spell will provide much-needed relief and recovery from recent flooding and disruptions.
- Forecast Validity: Next 10 days.
Courtesy of vigorous monsoon conditions, the Konkan Coast and Mumbai were deluged over the last ten days. The coastal city of Mumbai accumulated over 1,100 mm of rainfall, surpassing its monthly normal of 919.9 mm. Rainfall during the past 24 hours, however, was light to moderate, with Santacruz recording 32 mm and Colaba receiving a mere 3 mm. Overcast conditions, coupled with a moderate sea breeze, are keeping the weather pleasant. Abundant moisture, lingering cloudiness, and converging sea winds may trigger light and isolated rain or showers, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. However, no major downpour is expected over any part of the region during the next few days. The monsoon fury will ease, transitioning from deluge to drizzle, at least for the next ten days or so.
The low-pressure area over Madhya Pradesh has weakened further and shifted to Southwest Uttar Pradesh. It is no longer effective in strengthening the westerly surge over the Konkan region. The shear zone, which had earlier persisted along approximately 20°N, has also weakened over its western end near the Konkan Coast. Meanwhile, an anticyclone in the lower levels over the Equatorial Indian Ocean, in the vicinity of the South-Central Arabian Sea, will restrict the free flow of the westerly stream along the coastline. The next low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to revive monsoon activity over Konkan, is unlikely to develop for more than a week. In the absence of any trigger to strengthen the monsoon current, the Konkan Coast and Mumbai are expected to remain shielded from another spell of monsoon fury.
The entire Konkan Coast—from Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri to Raigad, Alibag, Palghar, Dahanu, and Mumbai—is expected to witness a significant reduction in rainfall activity. Light rain is likely in a few pockets and that too for short durations. This relatively dry spell will provide an opportunity for the region to recover from the widespread disruption caused by the recent spell of intense monsoon rainfall.
