Rain to Return in Maharashtra from March 30, Bringing Relief After Prolonged Dry Spell
Key Takeaways:
- Maharashtra recorded nearly 73% rainfall deficit between March 1–26
- Rain activity to begin from March 30, increasing till April 2–3
- Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Madhya Maharashtra to see initial showers
- Konkan and Goa likely to receive rain later during the spell
Maharashtra is set to see a much-needed change in weather after a prolonged dry spell through most of March. The state has been facing a severe rainfall deficit, raising concerns for agriculture and water availability across several regions.
Between March 1 and March 26, Maharashtra recorded a significant rainfall shortfall of nearly 73%. The situation has been particularly critical over Konkan and Goa, which remained almost completely dry with a deficiency close to 99%. Vidarbha also witnessed an alarming deficit of around 94%. Meanwhile, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra recorded deficiencies of 47% and 41%, respectively, indicating widespread dryness across the state.
Dry and warm weather conditions are expected to persist for the next couple of days, with largely clear skies dominating until March 29. However, a shift in weather patterns is likely to begin from March 30, bringing relief.
This change will be driven by developing weather systems over central and southern parts of the country. A trough is expected to extend from Northeast Madhya Pradesh towards Marathwada, while another trough may form from Coastal Karnataka to South Madhya Maharashtra. These systems will help draw in moisture and create favourable conditions for rainfall.
Starting March 30, isolated light rain may begin over parts of Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Madhya Maharashtra. During this initial phase, Konkan and Goa are likely to remain mostly dry.
Rain activity is expected to gradually increase from March 31 onward and may continue until April 2 or 3. Several parts of Maharashtra are likely to witness scattered to fairly widespread rain and thundershower activity during this period. This spell will help bring down rising temperatures and improve overall weather conditions.
Konkan and Goa are also expected to receive rainfall during this phase, especially over districts such as Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, and the hilly regions, including Mahabaleshwar.
By early April, the rainfall deficit across Maharashtra is expected to reduce significantly. This upcoming spell will provide much-needed relief to residents, particularly farmers, as improved soil moisture and better water availability will support ongoing agricultural activities.
Overall, the evolving weather systems indicate a positive turnaround after an extended dry period, offering hope for recovery across Maharashtra in the coming days.
