Pune has been reeling under excruciating heat for the last couple of days. The city’s airport observatory at Lohegaon recorded a blistering temperature of 43.8°C on Monday, May 11, 2026, setting a new all-time record. It surpassed the previous day’s record of 42.7°C. The temperature was 6.3°C above normal, amounting to severe heat wave conditions. This is now the highest temperature ever recorded for the city.
The earlier all-time record of 43.3°C was recorded at Shivajinagar on May 7, 1889. Being on the lee side of the Western Ghats, humidity levels dropped sharply to nearly 10%. Extremely hot northerly winds, combined with very dry conditions, scorched Pune and its suburbs for the second consecutive day. No immediate relief is expected during this week, and temperatures are likely to breach the 43°C mark once again today.
A well-marked anticyclone persists over the central parts of the Arabian Sea in the lower levels of the atmosphere. This system is pushing a strong stream of low-level dry northerly winds along the Western Ghats, affecting South Coastal Gujarat, Konkan-Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Coastal Kerala. Heat wave conditions continue over West Rajasthan, parts of Gujarat and Southwest Madhya Pradesh. The northerly wind flow is dragging intense heat downstream across Coastal Gujarat and Konkan. Its spillover effect is spreading across Madhya Maharashtra, especially northern parts including Pune, Nashik, Malegaon, Jalgaon and Ahmednagar.
The Shivajinagar Meteorological Office observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 41.6°C, slightly higher than the previous day’s 41.4°C. This was the highest temperature recorded at the observatory since at least 2015. Pune has not recorded any rainfall so far this month, against the normal monthly average of 19.8 mm. No rainfall is expected during the remainder of this week. However, some weather activity and isolated rain are likely during next week. The southwest monsoon normally reaches Pune around June 10, after which the city experiences relatively pleasant weather for nearly four months.
